2014 has started with good news about growth in the last quarter of 2013. The UK now looks as if it is firmly in recovery and as with any previous downturn this point in the economic cycle is a good one to start a new business as you will have a good economic climate in which to launch and grow.

However, there are sectors and businesses which are more resistant to recession and economic downturns. Cleaning is one such area. When clients come to us for a cleaning service they now invariably talk about it using the word ‘need’. So ‘I need a cleaner’ rather than ‘I want a cleaner’.

Having a domestic cleaner for many is now a necessity rather than a luxury. That is true of all client groups including professionals, families and in particular the elderly.

So yes by all means take advantage of the growing economy and seriously consider starting your new business now, but remember that another downturn will eventually come. That might be 5 years time or 10 years time. Choose a business sector that is resistant and you will no longer need to worry about the state of the economy.
